Project Description:

RockSol provided structural plan review, safety critical review, structural inspection including post tensioning, and materials testing support for the Pecos Street over I-70 Bridge Replacement Project. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in coordination with the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (CBE) undertook the construction of this $14 million project to replace the existing bridge structure on Pecos Street over I-70 and improve traffic operations of the Pecos / I-70 interchange. The project was awarded under the Construction Manager / General Contractor (CM/GC) delivery method to Kiewit Infrastructure.

To enhance mobility, the interchange improvements called for accelerated bridge construction (ABC) of a new bridge structure to carry Pecos Street over I-70, installation of a pedestrian walkway over I-70, and construction of two roundabouts, one at each end of the new bridge. The new bridge structure is a one-span superstructure that conforms to complex geometry resulting from the roundabouts on each end of the bridge. The complex geometry and the ABC considerations to minimize construction time and bridge weight led to a structure solution consisting of cast-in-place concrete post-tensioned box girder superstructure. The superstructure consists of four types of post-tensioning totaling over 7,200 feet. The new 2,400 ton bridge superstructure was constructed off-site and maneuvered into place with Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT) during one 50.5-hour interstate closure, achieving the minimum impact to I-70. Additionally, construction duration was minimized with the simultaneous completion of bridge abutments constructed in-place under the existing bridge. This is the first bridge in Colorado constructed with ABC techniques using SPMTs.

During construction, RockSol evaluated engineering submittals, inspected bridge elements, monitored post-tensioning in the bridge superstructure, resolved issues, and inspected the pre-fabricated pedestrian bridge and its erection. RockSol staff also monitored contractor activities to ensure compliance with requirements of the Safety Critical Plan and assisted in issue resolution for the roll-in superstructure construction. Additionally, RockSol performed quality assurance sampling, testing, inspection, and documentation for the materials incorporated into the project. The project was awarded the 2013 Award for Excellence in Bridge Construction from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
