Airport Road over Plum Creek Bridge Replacement Design

Client:

Douglas County

Services:

Transportation, Structural & Geotechnical Engineering, and Construction Services

Location:

Louviers, Colorado

Project Description:

RockSol led the design of this Douglas County project to replace the Airport Road Bridge over Plum Creek. The design team's scope of work included surveying, right-of-way plans, environmental categorical exclusion, hydraulic analysis, geotechnical engineering, roadway design, bridge engineering, and erosion control plans. RockSol managed the design team and was responsible for taking the project from scope and budget development through final design.

In addition to project management, RockSol’s scope of work included structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, erosion control plans, detour paving plans, and construction-phase support services. RockSol evaluated structure types and developed span configurations and structure depth in coordination with the roadway design and hydraulic design; incorporated bridge architecture into the bridge plans; and completed the final bridge design and check, plans, quantities, specifications, and load rating. RockSol conducted a subsurface investigation, consisting of drilling a total of ten boreholes, and provided the recommendations for the bridge foundation and the pavement design parameters for the new roadway and approaches. RockSol also prepared the roadway, paving, and drainage plans for the 800-foot, two-lane Lavaun Drive detour, designed to accommodate approximately 457 vehicles per day. The design developed ditches that drain to the proposed cross-culvert and outfall ditch.  RockSol prepared Grading Erosion and Sediment Control (GESC) plans per Douglas County requirements; GESC plans are similar to CDOT-style erosion control plans.

Complete bridge replacement construction documents were achieved through the utilization of our team’s highly-qualified engineers and professionals, effective project management, and regular communication between the RockSol team and Douglas County. We applied our extensive experience with the CDOT Local Agency process to prepare all plans and deliverables in accordance with requirements and guidelines of the Local Agency Manual. Upon completion of the project, RockSol received acclaim from the client for development of a cost effective solution that balanced the county’s long-term infrastructure needs with their financial resources. We were also complimented for our ability to meet all project deadlines, commitment to and delivery of high-quality final plans and specifications, and smooth coordination amongst project stakeholders.

During the construction phase, RockSol is assisting Douglas County with construction management by providing inspection and materials testing.
