Design Project: US 6 and Wadsworth Boulevard Interchange

Traffic and multi-modal travel in the Lakewood area have increased drastically and CDOT determined that changes to the interchange and roadway configuration were necessary to improve safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. CDOT, in partnership with FHWA, undertook an Environmental Assessment study in 2007 to identify potential improvements to the interchange. The goal of the project was to identify a design for the interchange and roadway to provide additional roadway capacity to meet current and future traffic demands for the area, enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and better support multi-modal demands, while minimizing impacts.


The Environmental Assessment took eight preliminary alternatives and a no-action alternative through a two-tiered screening process to determine the best alternative with the least impact. The preferred alternative included replacing the existing cloverleaf interchange with a tight diamond interchange including a loop ramp at the northwest quadrant and widening Wadsworth Boulevard between 4th Street and 14th Street.


The final design reconfigured the US 6 / Wadsworth Boulevard interchange, including the replacement of the existing structurally deficient US 6 bridge over Wadsworth Boulevard and lengthening all of the entrance and exit ramps. The roadway design for Wadsworth Boulevard added a travel lane in each direction, a raised median in the center of the roadway, and a multi-use sidewalk on both sides of the highway. Numerous other improvements were also included.


RockSol provided geological and geotechnical engineering as well as pavement design. For the preliminary and final design, RockSol drilled 80 additional boreholes for the soils investigation and materials classification to provide foundation recommendations for bridges, culverts, retaining walls and sound walls, and pavement thickness design and recommendations. RockSol also installed piezometer wells to monitor ground water levels on the project site.
